Headaches and Migraine
How Can Physiotherapy Help Treat Headaches and Migraines?
Headaches and migraines are one of the most common ailments, affecting millions of people on a daily basis. Seeking medical treatment is a sensible first step to rule out any medical causes for your headaches, especially if your headaches are a new or recent problem. Research has shown that neck problems are found to be a common cause of headaches.
Physiotherapy is highly effective in treating the underlying cause of headaches and migraines, which can be the result of pain from disorders in the upper part of the neck. These nerves link directly to a part of the brain that we know is sensitized in people with headaches.
When initially assessing the cause of headaches, palpation of the tight muscles and joints in the upper part of the neck can temporarily reproduce a patient’s head pain. This is key for us to diagnose a headache caused by the neck. If there are no relevant disorders found in the neck or upper back, then physiotherapy treatment is not recommended and we would refer you to a doctor or a specialist/ neurologist for further investigation.
- Subjective questioning to determine the nature and history of your headaches
- Postural observation to observe how your sitting style could affect your neck
- Range of movement testing
- Examination to find any dysfunction in your neck that relates to, or, reproduces your headache symptoms (temporarily only)
If treatment is recommended, we will provide a custom-made treatment plan to specifically ease the pattern of your headaches and migraines.
