Myofascial Release Therapy
If you've been experiencing soreness lately, you may have come across the term “myofascial release." This technique has gained popularity among athletes, weekend warriors as well as those in the fields of physiotherapy and sports science.
In this article, we will explore what exactly myofascial release is and why it is beneficial to have and maintain healthy fascia in our bodies.
What is Fascia?
Fascia, a type of connective tissue, acts as a continuous structure throughout our bodies, resembling a spider's web. It surrounds and interweaves with muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and even internal organs like the heart, lungs, brain, and spinal cord.

When fascia is healthy, it allows for smooth movement patterns by being mobile and flexible. However, restricted fascia becomes tight and rigid, leading to a type of pain and stiffness that is known as myofascial pain or myofascial restriction.
Causes of Myofascial Restrictions
Myofascial restrictions can result from physical trauma (such as falls, accidents, or surgery), habitual postures that lead to adaptive shortening, repetitive strain injuries, scarring, inflammation, or emotional trauma.
Myofascial restrictions may also develop from inflammatory responses, injury, surgery or lack of movement. Over time, there is a cumulative effect on the body that results in altered biomechanics (movement patterns), decreased range of motion or presentations of pain and discomfort as the tissue becomes more rigid, tight and less pliable.
Any restrictions to fascia will affect our flexibility and stability. Our tissue feels more rigid and less pliable – imagine feeling the sensation of wearing a sport coat that’s too tight. These restrictions may cause pain, prevent us from moving freely, and affect our ability to perform daily activities and withstand stress.
What is Myofascial Release Therapy?
Myofascial release therapy is a specialized technique that targets the release of tension and restrictions within this fascial system. By applying sustained pressure and gentle stretching, myofascial release aims to restore optimal movement and function.
A skilled massage therapist or physiotherapist with training in sports massage, can detect myofascial restrictions in clients and use specific techniques involving sustained pressure to release the points of tension, eliminating pain and restoring optimal movement patterns (motion).
Myofascial Release Therapy is performed directly on the skin without oils or lotions, allowing the therapist to accurately feel for fascial restrictions and lines of tension.
Common conditions in which myofascial release is used include back pain, neck & shoulder pain, lower limb/leg pain, TMJ disorders (jaw pain), plantar fasciitis and fibromyalgia.
Differences between Myofascial Release Therapy and Regular Massages
While regular massages may provide some benefits for fascia, myofascial release therapy is highly specialised and offers distinct differences in terms of technique and focus.
Different Techniques
Myofascial release therapy involves sustained pressure and gentle stretching to release tension and restrictions within the fascial system. It specifically targets areas of tightness or adhesions in the fascia to promote improved mobility, flexibility, and overall tissue health.
Depth of Treatment
Myofascial release therapy aims to reach the deeper layers of fascia, addressing restrictions that may not be effectively targeted by general massage techniques. A skilled massage therapist takes into account the time it takes to allow the tissue to release and restore hydration to the tissue which in turn creates the melt and frees up the adhesions, tissue and regain motility and mobility.
By addressing these deeper fascial layers, myofascial release therapy can help release chronic tension, alleviate pain, and restore optimal movement patterns.
Targeted Release of Fascial Restrictions and Trigger Points:
Myofascial release goes beyond quickly treating superficially and then onto trigger points, which are the specific “knots” in your muscle that are painful or sensitive to touch.
By beginning with a more focused treatment addressing the fascial restriction first, we are then able to have a longer lasting effect when we then use other modalities to treat trigger points or do joint mobilisations, etc. as we have begun freeing up that very important outside layer that attaches to everything else below the surface
Practical Tips to Maintain Healthy Fascia
Maintaining healthy fascia is crucial for overall well-being. Here are some practical tips to promote healthy fascia:
Keep Moving:
Regular exercise and gentle stretching help keep fascia mobile and supple. Try to incorporate activities that promotes flexibility and mobility. These include exercise, yoga, Pilates and even walking!
Stay Hydrated:
Staying hydrated ensures optimal fascial health by maintaining the water content in the tissues. Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day to support optimal tissue hydration and flexibility. The general recommendations of 8 glasses (8 ounces each) a day is a good place to start.
Minimise Prolonged Sitting:
Sitting or standing in one position for extended periods can lead to fascial restrictions. For those who spend a big part of the day sitting (at a desk job, for example), make sure to take regular breaks to move, stretch, and change positions throughout the day. Light stretching can also keep your fascia flexible.
Eat a Balanced Diet:
A diet that is rich in nutrients and minterals is crucial for the health of your fascial tissues. Consume a well-balanced diet rich in nutrients, including lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, to support optimal tissue function and repair.
Please note that these tips are general recommendations. Please consult with your therapist or healthcare professional for personalised advice based on your own specific needs and conditions.
Self-Myofascial Release Techniques
You can perform self-myofascial release techniques at home. Here are some commonly used tools that are used:
Foam Rollers: By rolling over specific muscles or fascial regions, individuals can help release tension and improve tissue health.
Massage Balls: Massage balls, such as lacrosse balls or tennis balls, can be used to target smaller areas or trigger points.
Stretching and Mobility Exercises: Stretching and mobility exercises into a daily routine can help maintain healthy fascia.
Who Can Benefit from Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release therapy is beneficial for a wide range of individuals, including athletes aiming to optimize their performance, individuals managing chronic pain or muscle imbalances, and those recovering from injuries.
Additionally, it can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being for anyone seeking to maintain healthy fascia and optimal movement patterns.
Myofascial release therapy is a valuable technique that physiotherapists and sport massage therapists use in conjunction with other physiotherapy modalities (such as manual therapy, exercise-based rehabilitation, acupuncture, stretch therapy).
Whether you're an athlete, managing chronic pain, or simply looking to maintain a healthy fascial system, myofascial release therapy offers a holistic approach to support your goals.
